JIMMY NELSON #2/Marshay Davis
1.)Jimmy
Nelson uses a self made 5x4 camera. The camera pieces come from Schneider and
Cambo. He also uses ASA kodak color film.
There's a
lot of dynamics that go into his portraits. He uses very low saturation. He
also primarily shoots at a range. This causes the scenery to play a role with
the subject matter. He chooses to
enhance his
photos with very sensitive toning. The mood in his portraits is transferred
within the processing. He utilizes the mood with his use of vignetting.
2.) In an
interview, Nelson states his true intentions were just to show the world how
much difference there is. He felt as if the modern world is so oblivious to
other people and different cultures. He wanted to capture the beauty of the
unknown. Or in other words, the beauty of what we don't yearn to know, or
acknowledge. His primary intentions were to show that these places are
special,
and are
forever evolving. Nelsons main goal was to expose individuality, and to embrace
it.
3) I
believe the process that Nelson puts his photos through, causes them to look
extremely monumental. They give this massive feeling. They also alter naive
thoughts. You think the world is
extremely
small until you get a glimpse of the versatility of his portraits. The way he
uses color, and also his choice of contrast help to draw you in. His choices
enticed me. They also made me ask
questions.
They also made me feel as if i knew the photographer personally. His location
choices. how almost every image, the people are staring directly at the camera.
There's a type of fearless
quality to
his work. His portraits give me a glimpse not only into these peoples worlds,
but his as well. There's mystery in assurance.
