1. John
Divola used grid structure within the framework of the house to make it seem as
though the viewer, or the room itself is floating. He manipulated the structure
already posed to him by spray painting to give visual interest without taking
away what the structure actually has to offer. In the background is either a
sunrise or sunset as he only shot during the early mornings and late evenings, maybe to heighten the contrast in mood between the abandonment of the house and
the stereotypical idea of beauty (that being nature).
2. To me these pictures could be about
destruction, new beginnings, and how the two often meet. Or even simply the use
of nature, grid structure, destruction and creation to employ ordered chaos.
3. Upon first glance of these pictures I immediately assumed that the background of the beach was photo shopped into the window of this house. It compelled me to know that John Divola intended to do this to give a “floating” effect. This was successful because by looking at the abandoned building and the background scenery, it still seems surreal.
