Ashanti Neverson - Weekly Artist Post 10
1.) These photos taken by Gordon Parks were for an essay he was working on for Life magazine in 1950 but the article was never published. These were taken in black & white, analog and I believe the camera was small format. He is very close to subjects being three to four feet away. For these photos his subjects are centered.
2.) Since Parks is so close to his subjects you can only focus on the people and their positioning. For the first photo of the woman in the chair from Parks' angle it makes her look like royalty on her throne. In the second photo the couple reminded me of the painting American Gothic. Again this is from his angle and positioning of his subjects. The last photo shows a man in the classic position of "the thinker". Unlike the first photo he seems unsettle and more worries than relief.
3.) For me these photos would have shown a different side to the media if these were published in 1950. At that time not many people of color were represented so these would have shown a better look into the world at that time. It would have been able to tell the stories of the unknown and unheard.
