Pat Kane
1) Pat Kane is a Canadian photographer based in Yellowknife. He contributes to many projects throughout Canada. The photos above are from him work in his gallery called “Personalities”. As a technical approach, I found two different approaches to his portrait photos that are in this gallery. He approaches some up close like a mug shot would be taken with a single colored background and others he approaches people in landscape environments but also includes an added light source to display the details and emotions on the person’s face. It looks as if he might be shooting in overexposed photos.
2) Pat Kane considers himself an editorial, commercial, documentary, and travel photographer. In these works, he shoots in light and dark scenes as well as up-close portrait photographs and more profile photos that include the person as the focus but also the background and its details. I really like how Pat Kane captured all of the people’s emotions or feelings in the photos regardless of the setting or where the photo could have been taken. For example, in the second photo, the young girl looks happy to be photographed.
3) Pat Kane’s work was very intriguing to me, especially because he was from Canada. I like the uses of under and over exposure in his works depending on the situation. For example, in the first photo, it looks as if the room was very underexposed and not well lit, however Pat was able to capture the details showing emotion on the man’s face as well as the details in the man’s skin and his skin tone. In the third photo, I was really drawn to the way Pat Kane captured the full outline of his subject in focus. He focused on capturing his stance and the detail of his silhouette and this was very well done especially considering the winter background it seems to be.
