Joey Scolieri - Weekly Artist Post 10

Richard Gilligan

1. Richard Gilligan is a photographer based out of Brooklyn, New York. The intent of this series was to showcase these DIY (do it yourself) Skateparks around the world in a new light. Usually, these skateparks are photographed in a harsh, dirty fashion but Gilligan wanted to highlight the beauty in these places. He took the series of photographs in color with the subject centered and in complete focus. Each photo was taken at a different time of day, all with no motion or people in them. By doing this he keeps the focus of the image on the skatepark itself.

2. The intent of this series was to capture the skateparks as he saw them, dirty but amazing concrete jungles. He wanted to show the imperfections but also highlight the beauty of people being able to come together and create something that any one can use at any time. This is an underground culture in itself and it isn't just based in the United States, his photos are from all around the world. The first image was taken in Oregon under an overpass in the very early morning. I think he does a great job showing the beauty of a simple concrete structure. The second image was taken in Philadelphia and the third was taken in Germany, these images both convey the vibe of a concrete jungle.

3. I really found this series of photographs to be extremely interesting because the subject matter is a first love of mine. I have always loved skateboarding ever since the age of 7 and it slowly progressed into a love of surfing and then into a love of boards in general. I think Richard Gilligan does an excellent job of highlighting the bright side of DIY skateparks. This is a culture that is built on friendship and a love of having fun and these images help convey that by showing the parks in a natural light.
