'Epitaph'
2013
Cally Whitham shoots these images in a way that you would not normally do for farm animals. These images are highly thought out, that pay special attention to the animals defining features. Each one of these portraits of the animals are shot in similar ways. The animal is entering the frame from the left hand side while facing to the right. The images are most likely altered or use a lot of lighting to get the effect of having soft darkened edges with the light focusing on the animals faces.
Cally Whitham wants to give farm animals a new definition. Many people think of farm animals as dirty unsophisticated beings, but Whitham wants you to view them differently. In each one of the portraits, the animals look very regal and seem to be showing emotions. When I look at these images I feel as if they are not animals but almost dignitaries or people with some sort of power. It is truly amazing how light and posture can change how we view a picture.
I really enjoy Whitham's portraits of the farm animals. I think it takes a lot of skill for a photographer to turn a subject that is always thought of as a dirty thing into something that is shown as a regal animal. I also enjoy Whitham's use of light in these photographs, I am going to look into technique that she uses. Lastly I really enjoy the high detail and color that are in each of the images, making the subjects almost look like paintings rather than photographs.
