Jessica Manno - Artist Post 3

Alexey Menschikov

1. Alexey Menschikov's photography consists of a lot of objects, people, animals, and buildings in black and white and mostly horizontal frame in format. Menschikov plays with light and shadow and reproduces them via photoshop to create a pattern or surreal forms. His processes take anywhere up to two weeks to complete, making sure the final product is something that draws interest from his inspirations.

2. Menschikov primarily does repetitious patterns of animals, architecture, or people and puts them together to create one surreal and visually appealing composition. The first photograph depicts some people walking in the direction of a large target that takes up and expands past the frame. The second photo is of a group of birds all together on a street. Menschikov reproduced their shadows and scattered their shape around the photo, making use of the positive space and creating a new feel to what the photo originally presented. The third photo is in color, and shows a stray orange cat cleaning itself. Its actual shadow is replaced by a snail's. Menschikov's projects all have a similar theme in seeing simple things in everyday life and showcasing them in a more surreal and artistic way.

3. I was instantly attracted at the third photo for its "weirdness" and creativity. I think Alexey Menschikov is truly creative and seems to think hard on the next project or have inspiration pretty easily and actually work towards it. Accessing his website and seeing the rest of his photos made me a new fan. I wished I could have gotten more from his site that I personally liked and shared them on here, but the site doesn't allow directly saving them onto your computer since it is copyrighted by him. So with that said, if anyone ever reads this post, I HIGHLY encourage you to check his site! The photographs are really unique and it made me appreciate the kinds of things you can do with photography more.

  1. Yes I had trouble saving Menschikov's photos on my computer.
I enjoy how Menschikov utilizes shadows and reflections to create a compelling composition. Some of Menschikov's reflection photos create a sense of distortion. It leaves one to guess what is the real figure and what is the reflection.
Jessica, I agree with you that Alexey Menschkiov's photos are unique, and they offer new view on how and what to photograph.
Glad you were able to share these photos.
