Olga Morozova - Artist Post # 4
1) Viviane Sassen was born in Amsterdam in 1972, where she lives in present moment. She first studied fashion design, later followed by photography. She is mostly known as fashion photographer. And her works are full of geometric shapes and often abstractions of bodies. Sassen has been widely published and exhibited.for her art projects she uses a Mamiya 6x7 film camera and shoots in digital, often with a team of up to 40 assistants.
2) As a child Sassen lived in Kenya and she often works in Africa. She published several books: "Parasomnia" (2011), "Flamboya" (2009) and her latest work from which I derived the pictures is called Pikin Slee. This work comprises photographs made in a remote village in Surinam formely known as Dutch Guyana and a historic subject of Dutch colonial power. Sassen states that she was attracted to the beautiful nature of the place and the traditional style of living. The photographer often takes black and white pictures, contrasting and making her subjects look abstract. Often the photos capture a sense of Sassen's personal connection to the village. She states that after traveling so much in Africa her ideas about the continent have changed. For her is is a continuous journey and her work is a reflection of that journey.
3) I like the contrast, the obscurity of faces and unusual poses of the subjects of Sassen's works. She is not interested in showing us the details of certain people, her goal is to introduce the archetype. It is noticeable that the artist is fascinated by the symbolism of bodies and objects and she tries to show us her perspective and her admiration of the beauty so different from the Western one.
