1. Gregory Halpern's photos mainly consist in a vertical, colored format with his primary subjects being nature and people. The photos above are from his most recent published photography book ZZYZK. Halpern's work is led by aesthetics, and showcases several areas where he has never been and many people he has never met. It appears Halpern's takes his photos with little to no interaction of changing the scenery, but instead appreciates it's natural beauty and captures it within a frame.
2. Halpern's most recent collection, ZZYZK consists of his exploration of California's vast and ever-changing scenery - from the ocean to the desert. Through this collection, viewers also may take a look into the residents of humid California. The ZZYZK collection has been noted to share a theme of water or thirst. The plants and people have a sort of "dryness" to them, and although the idea of thirst is harrowing, Halpern is able to show viewers that the plants and people of dry California are happy and satisfied - purely because it is their home.
3. How Halpern shows the contrast between two polar opposite areas, the ocean and the desert, bring an interesting feel to how California may be. I was interested in the kind of people he chose to photograph. Although they don't look as "refreshed" in appearance as they could be, they seem content. That kind of image also applies to the various plants and scenery he captured. I think it's an overall appealing concept and original theme.
