Brandon Baker Artist Post 1

Sage Sohier

While searching through photographs and artists, I stumbled upon a project by the artist Sage Sohier. The title of the project is "Americans Seen", a collection of photos taken of strangers while Sohier journeyed the world at 20 something. Each photo was taken in black and white, helping to give a antique feel that suggested the photos date and timeline(1980's). I was not able to find the exact dimensions and camera used on this exhibition. However, I read on a few cites that it was a medium format camera. The photos showed the lives of everyday citizens as Sohier visited their respective cities. The photos help convey how easy and carefree things were in that era, before technology became the main priority. The first photo shows a teenage boy or man seemingly enjoying the breeze. In modern times this would be a teenager glued to his or her phone or on the computer. But instead the subject is enjoying nature. Even in the second and third pictures the subjects are enjoying nature in its raw state. I enjoyed this project because I too at times wonder how life was back before the "dot com boom". This helps me live vicariously through the subjects shown in each photo, as well as better understand their conditions back then.
