Cory Hogan - Artist Post 3

1.) For this project, Stephen Shore used an 8x10 camera. He also always used a tripod and framed both horizontally and vertically. The selected photos were taken when Shore was in his 20s from 1972-1979.

2.) This series by Stephen Shore was titled Uncommon Places. Shore drove throughout the United States searching for ordinary things. Shore used his eye for light and color to help make these pictures much more than ordinary even though the subjects are. The photographer managed to make pictures that feel both mysterious and personally significant at the same time. The first picture looks to be a small hotel room with a TV where the light from the window shines brightly into the entire room. The second picture shows a parking lot filled with parked cars but lacks any people making it feel busy yet so empty at the same time. The third picture has two guys matching in all sweats and they definitely don't look glamorous or flashy.

3.) Shore managed to show that with the correct choices and intentions, you can make a nice looking picture even if it's just a boring hotel room or two guys in sweats. The subjects of these photos are truly ordinary and in reality they are slightly boring looking but the lighting and colors in them surpass the boringness of the subjects. These photos help capture bits of everyday life in America in the 70s.
