Tori Anderson
Troi Anderson uses photography to gain access to cultish, invite-only gatherings promoting spirituality. This particular set is about Espiritismo, Venezuelan voodoo. He has also covered voodoo in Haiti. Anderson is drawn to the sacredness and rituals because of the disparity of "secular, techno- Utopia culture" he comes from.No specifications are found as to what he shoots with or technical stats but I'm guessing he doesn't have an elaborate set up as the venues for the voodoo rituals are crowded tents only lit by candlelight or in caves with natural light filtering from cracks. Doesn't seem like he has much room to work with or time to set anything up; the rituals seem very in the moment.
His work seems like text book examples of the kind of tenebrism only Caravaggio could make. Figures are bathed in light and dark, and are very close to the frontal plane, making you feel apart of the prophetic visions Anderson makes.
