Breotnie Nichols - Weekly Artist Post

Michael Massaia

Michael Massaia most likely utilized a wider aperture considering there would be no need for a deep depth of field. He would need to increase the shutter speed, above hand holding, so the image will not be over exposed. It seems as though Massaia is shooting in a dark location, which would require him to increase his ISO.  However, there is an apparent light being shown on the objects. This would allow him to decrease his ISO.

In Transmogrify, Michael Massaia uses melting ice cream pops to reflect one's childhood. Massaia takes the innocent ice cream pops, that is often connected to fond memories, and distorts them into haunting images. The melting ice cream bars represent the distorted views children have of the world around them, which often appears as dark and lonely for many children. The bright colors in the center represent youth, while the more subdued colors represents the surrounding world.

I appreciate this series both visually and thematically. I love how the melting ice cream creates a galaxy like form around the still intact ice cream bar. It's like a child holding on to their bright happy world, while trying to avoid the darkness around them. Transmorgrify brings back so many childhood memories, both the good and the bad. It mostly brings back feelings of loneliness, which I still deal with today. Who knew ice cream could evoke so many feelings? Overall, I think the photos are captivating and eerily beautiful.
