Brianna Ivey: Weekly Artist Post

Allison Joyce

1. In Bangladesh, a group of eight girls ages from ten to thirteen work from sunrise to sunset selling items such as jewelry and snacks to beach-goers. the girls left school in order to support their families. The girls was thrown into adulthood prematurely, wondering when their next meal was going to be and the threat of child marriage and poor working conditions hit close to home for the girls.

2. Allison Joyce made a series of photographs of Johanara, Aisha, Shumi, Suma, Rifa, Mayasha, Nargis, and Shobe Majaraz having a moment to be children by playing in the water. Joyce meet the girls through their lifeguard Rashed and his wife. When Rashed was a child,  he had dealt with similar situations like the girls. Rashed teaches them how to surf and he also mentors them. The girls learn self-worth and confidence by doing these activities and also fantasize about an oppress free life. The girls families are against them surfing and does not see any value in the sport. Their parents prefer that they work each hour of the day. They shared their goals and dreams and hope that marriage will be a choice and not be forced upon them.Bangladesh is the second highest international country that allows child marriage. Most of child marriage occurs in poor neighborhoods for to financial stability. Women and girls who refuse to marry have been victims of attacks and sequel harass on the streets.

3. Reading about these girls story is a bittersweet moment.  It is sad that live in a place where their government does not care about them because of how little money they make. The main reason a lot of eastern countries are considered "third world" is because of the corruption in the government.  Children should be concern about school work and playing with their friends not worrying about making money to support their families and some pedophile wanting to marry them. A lot of girls and women in Eastern countries are not seen as human beings but as property. Females in Eastern and in some cases Western countries are not protected by their country. In Eastern countries some of the people kill the girls because they are not seen as worthy; however,  both males and females are needed to populate the world. When countries around the world start valuing females as much as males then we can start to make the world a better place.
