Grace Herion - weekly artist post

Jenny Lewis

Jenny Lewis uses minimal equipment for this shoot, using mostly or only natural light. I am unsure what type of camera she uses. Knowing that she is using natural light and very unpredictable settings, she clearly takes complete advantage of whatever setting she walks into for that shoot.

Jenny Lewis uses this series to confront society's prejudice against those first hours and days of motherhood where the mother is still in a way pregnant. She is not skinny yet and is still recovering from the birth. After Lewis gave birth to her second child, she realized how ignored this time is and that is how she came up with the concept for the project. Her subjects are completely natural, in that they wear whatever they want and shoot in their own homes. Lewis wants the photos to be as real as possible to the subjects. She does an amazing job in taking these women in this time of recovery, excitement, confusion, and so many other emotions, and making the images just beautiful.

I LOVE Lewis' photos. However, I don't necessarily agree that there is such a prejudice against the brand-new mom. I would agree that a lot of people don't realize how ugly it can be (you're swollen and puffy at first and exhausted, etc.) but I don't think people actually ignore it out of a dislike for that time. Maybe she lives in a different culture though. Lewis lives and photographs in a small part of London.
