Ashanti Neverson - Weekly Artist Post 8

1.) The pictures made by Marjorie Salvaterra were taken to explore womanhood. They were taken in black and white and I believe in digital. It seems the photographer stands elevated from the subjects standing at least six feet away from them. These photos show equipment and natural lighting that keep the subjects and their background well exposed.

2.) The choice of black and white give these pictures an older look making them feel classic in a way. The distance of the photographer and the subject makes these pictures look like surreal paintings which was the idea behind her work. In the first photo the women are laying all over the place as if they are dead in this kitchen or cleaning type of area. It's like they are saying that the expectancy of women in the domestic domain kills them. Just like the third photo where it looks like the woman is on a date but her head is face down in the table as the man continues. Unlike the first and third photo, the second shows the ladies among themselves having dinner posed as the famous Last Supper scene where they seem alive and well.

3.) These photos spoke about gender and what I believed to be the growing pains of womanhood. In the scenes where the women were expected to be according to society they all seemed dead and lifeless. In contrast, when they were out in the world they were lively and stood strong. To me it means always live for yourself and not what others deem appropriate for you. It could also mean you are strongest when you are living the life you want to be out in the world.
