Logan Willis - Weekly Artist Post #10

Eric Pickersgill

1) Eric Pickersgill did this wonderful group of work on pictures that would normally feature a cell phone. He named the collection of these photos "Removed" as he removed the cell phone that would normally be placed in different spots in all of these situations. It looks as if Eric is using a DSLR camera and possibly an additional light source added to the photo. He focuses on shadows, highlights, and reflections in the background. It also looks like he either used Photoshop to remove the cell phones or he had the people placed just so without their cell phones.

2) Eric chose to do these pieces in black and white photographs. I think this really brings out his true motive and direction that he is taking with this particular project. I think the use of black and white truly makes the project's importance more significant. For example, in the third photo, this photo doesn't seem happy nor does it depict what looks as if it is about to turn into a horrifying situation. I think the choice of creating black and white photos works great with his intentional project here. He focuses on that fact that people in general in today's society are always on our cell phones and tend to lose out on things that could be enjoyable in every day life. He focuses on the fact that we may lose out on time and memories with our loved ones because we're too busy being on our cell phones.

3) I personally am very moved by these photographs because they really hit home for me. The third photo especially focuses on the importance of NOT texting and driving because of what could happen and I also really enjoy the narrative that the first photo signifies. When I look at the first photo, I see that both people look unhappy, sad, and as if they're lacking personal interaction because they would both be on their cell phones. This is a very important issue in today's society that was brought up in these photographs.
