Mary McCarter- Weekly Artist Post 11

Carly Steinbrunn

Steinbrunn uses light and color to enhance and transform normal landscape into something different. All three photos are washed out in color however each photo has very clear lines that cut the photos in a sense. There is a change in direction as well, in the first photo there is a strong horizontal line however it is interrupted by the larger boulder the makes the lines skew. Within the second photo there are clear vertical lines however the lines themselves are waved and uneven. Lastly, the third photo has a good contrast of vertical line as well as horizontal lines. Color contrast is most abundantly recognized with the yellows of the water and the blues in the sky.

Steinbrunn works with a theme of transformation and movement in these pictures. It is like she wants to capture these scenes but then turn them into something completely different. In all three images it is unclear as to what is being pictured at first, especially in the second photo due to its background. She uses color and light as vehicles to show these photos can be something other than just a landscape.

These photos are interesting, however I'm not sure if I like them or not. The third photo is the strongest of the three in my opinion. The contrast of color with the yellows and blues is very intriguing. All three of are very skillfully taken in the aspect of perspective. Each one has the subject matter completely kill the space as if it is overflowing this being particularly true for the first and the third photos. The second photo is the weakest of the three for me because the background is one solid color with a small difference throughout.
