Dawit Samson - Weekly Artist Post #10

Kata Sedlak

1.) Kata Sedlak captures her two boys in her photo series:Boyhood. Sedlak has wide apperature in the first two pictures since they are not all the way blurred out. The third picture seems to have a low apperature with the background blurred and the foreground not. She incorporates shape as well. Triangles can be seen through out these photos. The triangle formed by the child's hand in the third picture adds more emphasis on the subject, the boy. The shadow in the box of the first picture has a triangle form, and the diagonal line aims straight to the girl.

2.) The theme of this series is boyhood essentially. Though there are many more in the series, these three photos give us a glimpse of boyhood. Viewer gets a sense of heartbreak from the first photo, curiosity  from the second, and sadness in the third.

3.) I personally like the techniques she used to create the series. The use of black and white gives the series a timeless feel. The contrasting shadows and highlights appeal to my eyes b/c you can tell a story by it. For instance the first one the boy is somewhat in the shadow, while the girl is in the sunlight, highlight. This could means that the girl that he likes rejected him or something along that path.
