Carra Roots - Weekly Artist Post 4

Kai Caemmerer

Kai Caemmerer is a Chicago based photographer. It seems as though much of his time is spent doing photography of architecture and light. The photos above are those from his "Unborn Cities” series. Here, he goes into the city of China and captures these vacant buildings. At the time when these pictures were being taken, it was as if China was planning ahead. They had all of these large, wonderful buildings, yet they were vacant. Kai captured that well.

With these photos, you are left to imagine. He took them at different times of the day which brings an atmosphere. Natural and secondary lights came into play. Not that he brought light in, but street lights, building lights, and also reflections. It adds to the viewpoint he was trying to make. One viewing the picture and may see no people, but one might also construct in their mind the busy sight that it was soon to be. In some of the pictures, you might still see construction being done. Contrast is being made not only with the meaning of the photos, but also with lighting, composition, and functionality of the buildings.

I love the way these pictures were taken. I appreciate the quality of all the pictures because I know that setting up for the right lighting with the low light used in some of the pictures took some time. I also like the decisions made as to being close up or far away from the buildings. That to me worked in his favor.
