Nini Norris Weekly Post 4

Clarissa Bonet

Clarissa Bonnet uses the contrast of stark lighting and heavy, deep shadows along with a muted color palette to create a new perspective on the "city" and normal things one could find there in her series "City Space". She primarily focuses on the Urban space. Due to her use of heavy shadows, her pictures lend themselves to a cinematic feel.

The artist intends to explore her environment in the urban setting. She is interested in the physical space and its relation to the human experience and the impact it makes on the body. Using the lighting she re-imagines the city space and adds a psychological twist to the photographs. She expresses her photographs are not to lump all experiences as one but to examine her own personal interpretation.

Due to the heavy shadows and contrast, there is definitely a psychological feeling to these pictures. The shadows feel like a personification of something, i'm just not sure what that is--maybe its the idea of losing yourself or almost losing yourself in the vastness of the city. I really enjoy the cinematic approach to these photographs, they look like they could be still of a film. Overall, the series works well, along the artist's intentions and technical choices which work well together to create dramatic and beautiful, moody, shadowy portraits of the city space.

  1. I find this so interesting to me. Just from looking at the pictures. Sometimes we don't always see the world like we may feel others do. This goes to show for me just having an eye and patience can go a long way with making a picture.
