Mae's subject matter is an emotional rollercoaster anyways by documenting incarcerated moms. In California mom's with babies below the age of 7 and were in minimum security. The babies and young children were enrolled into preschool and kindergarten at the prison.

Mae's photography is able to capture the life that many of us don't visually see when we think of prisons. She watched moms that are doing routine things with their children just like moms who are not in prison. Many of the photographs that are seen you wouldn't even be able to tell that they were taken inside a prison unless you were told. I think that this adds so much depth to the project because this makes the difference between the routines of incarcerated moms and not incarcerated moms not that different allowing the viewer to be one step closer to being able to relate.

All of Ryan's photographs have a very similar backgrounds they all have a very pale white, yellow, or blue background then the subject provides spritz of bright color that automatically draws my eyes to them.
