Catherine Meadows Weekly Post 5

Broken Land

1) what are the artist’s technical choices?
Eliot uses a large format camera. For his Broken Land series, he created diptychs. He chooses a variety of landscapes to photograph. Some photos, if you look closely, show motion. The motion, in my opinion, is a great choice and makes each photo very strong.

2) what are the artist’s conceptual and/or thematic intents?
Eliot's conceptual intent is the idea that history repeats itself. His goal with these landscapes was to make them come to life. He hoped that people who viewed these works would think of war and our (America's) participation in wars. His intent was to show the "cyclical nature" of war.

3) how do you respond to these choices and intents?
I personally love Eliot's work. Shane mentioned him during our last class when we were discussing different ways to make a pinhole camera. I immediately looked his work up and was mesmerized. I think his choice to create diptychs make each landscape extremely interesting to look at. The continuity from each photo is amazing and very well done. As for his conceptual intents, I can see it portrayed well in certain photos. However, I would not have gotten the idea of "war is cyclical" without having read his artist's statement beforehand.
