Ashanti Neverson - Weekly Artist Post 12

Scot Sothern and Muid Vidler

1.) These two photographers have taken color portraits of people who aren't considered to be apart of mainstream culture. Their subjects are ranging from four to twenty feet away. Most of the lighting is natural and some with what looks like flash. Most of their subjects are centered with an odd background behind them.

2.) In the first photo the girl is dressed as if she is going to work. Her stance shows how serious she is and makes us wonder if she is just dressed up that way or could possibly have some type of job. There isn't much contrast in that picture as she has on an all red suit and is standing in front of a reddish brick wall. The second picture is interesting as, what appears to be, a homeless man sleeping in front of a mural of a man's eyes staring at the viewer. The green from the painting's eyes make me stare at the red object the man is laying his head on. The last picture shows a man dressed as superman standing in front of a mural of celebrities in a theater. He almost blends in from the way he is leaning although his red and blue costume pops more compared from the darker hues in the mural.

3.) These photos show ordinary people under some very different and sometimes difficult circumstances. The second photo in particular grabbed my attention as the eyes from the mural make me think of a higher power watching over the man or watching society pass him by as he lives like this. The third photo is very funny to me as if he wanted to be famous or had bigger dreams but is just a copy of someone else's. It's like he almost fits in but is on the outside.
