Logan Willis - Weekly Artist Post #13

JUCO - Work by: Julia Galdo and Cody Cloud

1) JUCO represents the work that artists Julia Galdo and Cody Cloud have created together. They started originally working on assignments in a class and now they are based out of Los Angeles, CA. In most of their works, Julia and Cody focus on contrasting bright colors and patterns in the backgrounds with the subjects in their pieces of work. They use both shallow and deep depths of field and some photographs are in black and white but most are in bright color with high saturation.

2) The themes that Julia and Cody use are retro themes/patterns especially in their backgrounds as well as floral patterns or other patterns that surround the subject(s) being photographed. I am drawn to their use of highly saturated colors and also the many different projects they have. For example, they have different themes for their advertising than they do for their other projects such as personal and assignment. Most of the photographs in their collection named assignments include actors and actresses and they are photographed in environments that they normally wouldn't be photographed in because they are very unrealistic and surreal backgrounds and environments that they are placed in.

3) I was really drawn to these three photos in particular because they feature older folks in them with their imperfections and different emotions that they have as humans. I also like that the older women are featured with bright colored lipstick on as well as well as in fun, yet chaotic outfits with highly contrasting backgrounds that fit very well with their makeup, outfits, etc. In contrast, I am also drawn to photograph number one that is showing an elderly man with a black tank on featured on a pastel splattered background. This was very interesting to me because maybe the point of featuring these people in these chaotic, yet fun backgrounds is showing that the people are physically getting older but their spirits are still young.
