Seamus Murphy
The Hollow of the Hand
(1994-2004)

Photojournalist Seamus Murphy seems to mainly focus in taking portraits of people all over the world. In this series Murphy seems to generally take the photographs with the subjects consent, but in some images this may not be the case. Furthermore, Murphy takes the lighting of very situation into affect as he takes the photograph. Whether is images is indoors or outside, the lighting helps the viewer focus on what is important in the images.
Seamus Murphy travels to areas that the average american goes all the time, places such has the barber and the metro, but he couples these images with ones that are not so common in every day life. Although the images can be very different they all work together seamlessly. Murphy decides to take pictures of the everyday life of everyone weather they be in the united states or over seas in places like Afghanistan. This way of photographing brings people together in a way that you normally don't see.
Seamus Murphy has a really interesting way of photographing people. The images seem almost set up but in a way that is reality. I enjoy the way that his images are lit and the way he captures the views attention. Murphy brings two worlds together in a way that I haven't seen done before. As a photographer, if I am ever presented with the same opportunity I will remember how Murphy brought the to worlds together by simply photographing every day life in a way that seems natural.
