Max Goossens - Weekly Artist Post 14

Farhad Rahman
"One Last Playground"

Farhad Rahman takes this series of portraits in a self made 'playground' somewhere outside of Dhaka. Rahman decides to frame his subjects in a way that emphasizes that they are smaller children. Most of the portraits also include lots of negative space giving the subjects lots of room around the boarders. Further more Rahman decides to over expose the images in a way that helps show the landscapes qualities. At times the subjects, or the objects they are holding, almost disappear into the background.
As an artist I think Farhad Rahman is trying to show these subjects in a natural way. Although the images are posed in a way that he has set up, I believe that this was the experience that he received. Rahman uses the technique of over exposing his images to emphasizes to the viewer the desolate area that these kids call a playground. Rahman is not trying to create a false reality for these children to live in, he shows the viewers exactly their condition.
I really enjoy Farhad Rahman's "One Last Playground". I believe in showing reality, not trying to put subjects in a place that they are not normally found in. I think that his choice to over expose every image, really helps me connect to the image that I may not have been able to if they were under exposed another stop or two.  In every Image you can see a story that is unfolding in each child's mind. As a photographer Rahman does a good job showing that these images are in a set and belong together.
