Kat Hennessy Weekly Blog Post [Week 8]

Graciela Iturbide

Graciela Iturbide resides in Mexico City and works primarily with gelatin silver print. Her photos have great contrast that gives a bold look to her images. She is largely considered to be a still life photographer, but has numerous portraits as well.

Iturbide's portraits are unique because they never capture the subjects full image or true identity. Often the subjects have parts of their body hidden or obscured by use of objects, reflections, masks, or careful positioning. This can give the feeling that the image is not about the person themself or their physical being, but rather their place within the environment, world, or is telling the viewer something about their character.
