Monica Turley- Weekly Post

These three pictures are part of a series that was shot by Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti. This series is titled Toy Stories which captures children from around the world with their most prized possessions: their toys. Galimberti traveled the world for the project and his experience led her to believe that "at their age, all children are the same, they just want to play". However, it's how they play that differs. She found that in richer countries, the children were more possessive of their toys and it took much longer for her to gain their trust. In the less developed countries where the children had only one or two toys, those children shared what they had almost immediately. The toys became reflective of the world that each child was brought into. The children's daily life directly impacted the types of toys they found interest in.

The first picture is of a girl from Castigalion, Italy. This girl is being raised on a dairy farm, so she watches her mother and father work with tools that look similar to these toys. She likely works along side of them with these toys that she loves. The second picture is of a boy from Keekorok, Kenya. This hut is likely his home, and he may only own this one animal. The blankets and soft monkey make his home look comfortable and warm despite having few posessions The third picture is of a boy from Kiev, Ukraine. The Ukraine is an independent country however it's borders are constantly being provoked. This young boy has already been influenced by the hostile environment he lives in. His face is harsh and his toys are weapons. I loved each photograph; it truly made me realize the power of a child's environment.
