Sarah Widenhofer - Weekly Post #7

Mariella Furrer is a Swiss and Lebanese photographer who has lived in Africa her entire life.  She attended the Documentary Photography & Photojournalism Program at the International Center of Photography in NYC. She now considers herself a freelance photojournalist who makes pictures all over Africa.  She works in both color and black and white dependent on the subject matter.  The images shown above are from her book My Piece of Sky: Stories of Child Sexual Abuse.

The photos Furrer creates for this cause range from the children who have suffered in their homes or at clinics, to police raids of suspected criminals, to funerals of the children lost.  The subject matter is terribly strong and Furrer wants to speak out against child abuse.  As a victim of child abuse herself, she says that she knows she cannot change what has happened to the children, but she hopes to help mend their souls, and bring awareness to prevent other children from suffering.
