Sarah Widenhofer - Weekly Post #6

Cynthia Henebry is a VCU fine arts graduate whose subject matter centers around children. She uses digital media to explore children in every moment of life, not just the cheery moments we imagine when we think of childhood.  He work is often slightly underexposed, and frames the subject with consideration to the expression and/or location of the child and the emotions they are feeling. Her series working with children have been going on for several years now.  She photographs her own children as well as friends' and strangers'.

Henebry photographs children as an attempt to remember what her childhood was like, and a way to invite others to make the same questions as well.  When the word childhood is brought to mind, most people create imagery of happiness, blissfulness, and carefree moments; however, these are not the only emotions that consume children. Henebry creates photos that depict children in real moments of thought or contemplation other than joy. I find myself appreciating her work because it brings to light that children are real people with real emotions, just like anyone else.
