Kat Hennessy Weekly Post [Week 6]

Brent Stirton

Brent Stirton is a well known photographer that does a alot of photojournalism work. He is based out of South Africa, and focuses a lot on major events and issues in that area- though he has traveled extensively. Many of his photographs have a very particular subject, and fairly shallow depth of field- allowing the most clarity to be provided around said subject.

Some of Stirtons portraits appear to be slightly underexposed or have heavy contrast between the shadows and highlights. Perhaps this is to give the viewer an even deeper sense of the heaviness or darkness of some of the issues or subjects he photographs. He has captured various kinds of cultures and people, such as poachers and the aftermath, burned or wounded or diseased people, those afflicted with AIDS, and remote tribes and their customs. Though many of his photographs are of very controversial or emotionally moving subjects, good or bad, there are very few of his works that won't give the viewer some kind of reaction, feeling, or thought provocation.
