Sarah Widenhofer - Weekly Post #9

Justin James Reed is a visual artist based out of Richmond, Virginia.  His photography work and artists books have been exhibited throughout the world.  He has worked under photographers such as Alec Soth. He shoots using a large format camera, and his subject matter is very broad.  Reed creates photos in vibrant color or black and white. He appreciates the fact that photography can create a sense of unworldliness, or mystery, and utilizes this as a tool for the content of his work.

Reed has several series including "In Heaven," "The Real Unknown," "Don't Die," and "New Cities." The last photograph posted above is from "New Cities," which is one of my favorite pieces.  The way he captures the hard, gray geometric lines breaking up the beautiful, colorful, organic scene of nature creates a sense of interruption, but one could almost argue they coexist.  It creates a sense of wonder, whether the artist is trying to say this is ugly or beautiful, bad or good.
