Kat Hennessy Weekly Post [Week 11-make up]

Andres Marroquin

Andres Marroquin is a contemporary photographer who captures portraits and still life with a similar approach of simplicity within the frame, and powerful imagery within the context of the subject matter. His series Conditions is where I found his work to be most impressive for my personal interest. The photographs I chose to show in this blog, I feel, work together in a brilliant manner even though they display very different content. The first two photos have similar color pops and use a contrast of dark and light, black and white. The next pair of photographs use a different approach: not as much contrast with lighting, gives a very light, airy feel, and places the subject in the middle of the picture.

The second pair of photos especially I find a deep connection with in that both subjects give off a feel of light, wonderful beauty and elegance, but upon further inspection we see that both the flowers and the woman are "affected" with a condition. The flowers are beginning to wilt and droop and the colors, though still vibrant and beautiful, are starting to dull. With the woman we also see a color variation of some sort of skin color differentiation. Interestingly, the color tones of the woman's skin mirror the color palate of the wilting flowers. It is this sort of imagery and content that evoke the mind and keep the viewer staring at a photograph or series of photographs for a long time.
