Paul Ruehrmund Weekly Post

Richard Steinheimer (1929-2011) has been called the Ansel Adams of the railroad photography world.  He lived in California and had a fondness for the landscape of the American West.  He learned photography as a photojournalist for the U. S. Navy and was a photojournalist and industrial photographer in Silicon Valley.  In 1965 his photos were featured in a solo exhibit in Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

Early on Steinheimer used a large format camera and pioneered the use of elaborate lighting for night photos later adopted by O. Winston Link.  When small portable cameras became available he would position himself atop locomotives so that his camera would capture the feeling of motion.  He published a number of popular books on trains including "A Passion for Trains" published in 2004.
