Bryan Schumat is a photographer in New York and most well known for his phonebook Grays the Mountain Side Brings. In this book his shoots vast landscapes and also takes dramatic portraits of subjects. Overall the photos from the book have a sad and dark feel to them which says a lot about his style. The pictures all have a "cold" tone that allows the few brighter colors to really stand out.
For his portraits he takes a more traditional style. Most of the shots have their subject in focus with the background blurred which tells me his aperture was stopped down. This approach really contrasted Jeffrey Stockbridge's series on Barbers in New York where he captured the subject and intentionally brought the foreground and background into focus to emphasize surroundings.
Schumat's landscapes also make good use of light in color. Whether its the purple in the skies contrasting with the water or the yellowish tone of the grass in winter in front of the mountains, all his pictures still have color.
