Simone McPhail - Landscape and portrait

Alec Soth

Landscape: Alec soth has much "lighter" pictures of  one subject smiling in a beautifully framed space in his portfolio but I chose this because the picture is heavier all over. not only are the subjects innumerable but the motion and weight of what was going on in the photo attracted me. not to mention the contrast of the whipped creme and the people. This picture works well as a landscape because you feel like you're in the mess of what is happening. it could've also worked as a portrait if there was a large amount of creme being thrown up in the air.

Portrait: This portrait is also a bit heavier in contrast than Alec Soths other photos. the workers clothing and face contrast so well with the grey sky and the lighter grey ground. The mountains to his right frame his elbow, they also frame the position of his body which is swayed more towards the left.   this picture is a classic portrait with many nuances that make you take another glance.
