In the portrait Colin chose to make his focus the flowers in
the foreground. The artist does an
excellent job with cropping and placement.
The yellow light above the man’s head has almost a sort of halo like
effect. He placed his body so that the
two white flowers cover the older man’s eyes.
Another decision that the artist made outside of the camera was to
straighten the flowers so that he ensures that they do covers the man’s
eyes. The subject has a sort of
triangular shape to it, which brings my eyes up to the golden light or halo and
back down the arm back to the table and flowerpot.
For the landscape Colin Gray has this excellent ability to capture
light and dark and reflections of light even in the darkness. He chooses not to make the photograph from
directly in the center of the roadway but rather at an angle which creates a
more dynamic perspective. There is an
excellent gradient of color in the sky and a deep depth of field. As stated before the decisions that the
photographer chose to make outside of the camera were time of day and physical
location of his body while taking the photograph. He could have very well made this photograph more
centered as far as the lit building in the back however he chose to make his
focus the darker building to the left and right.
