1. Ren Hang lights, highlights and shadows to show the contrast between each subject and the background. His photos either have a natural, white, or red background. The models he uses are all positioned according to the way he wants the his views of that setting to be portrayed. Many of his photos are over exposed, so even with a high ISO, detail is lost. Based on the amount of lighting in certain areas of the subjects, I believe he also used flash.
2. His intentions are not very clear. From what I can see from his photos on his website, he attempts to create illusions. For example, in the second photo, the black snake is not very noticeable; it appeared to be a part of his hair. A lot of his photos are nudes, or partial nudes that also show an illusion of the human body. In a few of his exhibitions, he conveys the homosexuality that has continued to be revealed throughout the Chinese culture.
3. I like the way he made each photos. I am a huge fan of optical illusions in pictures. I think his choices for the actions of the models are very bold and abnormal. Especially since China is a very secretive in the ways and choices of their people. The title "New China" fits perfectly. It shows how much China is evolving from its old traditional ways and becoming more socially modernized.
