Richard Rothman series called Redwoods is an amazing using of light. The series is in black and white but how implements beams of light color contrast is stunning. As far technical choices that he makes for his landscape photos I would assume he would be using a settings combination that balanced in order to achieve an in focus foreground and background while also preserving the contrasting lights.
His portraits are interesting as well because in the photo above his subject is aligned directly in the middle of the frame and making direct eye contact with the camera. Unlike Bryan Schutmat he chooses to bring the background into focus. This decision is interesting and is one I prefer because its adds an entirely different element into the photo. It builds a relationship between the subject and its environment.
I personally enjoy black and white photos so Rothman is one of my favorite weekly blog photographers this far. Without color, I feel as though you have to try that much harder to make a great interesting photography and thats something Rothmans does well.
