Matt Thyssen - Landscape & Portrait II

Richard Rothman

Portrait: In this photo the artist takes advantage of the barren landscape to really add weight to his subject.  He's darker, bolder, and more present than anything else in the photo, you know immediately where to look when looking at this photo.  I'm sure the artist wanted to portray some message about this unfortunate youth working a useless job for minimum wage in a seeming poor city, but before even thinking about that, you know what this is supposed to be a picture of.

Landscape:  Just as he did in the portrait, he really achieves weight in this one.  I'm sure that was harder in this one than in the portrait.  He didn't have the advantage of a barren landscape to isolate the subject.  Here, he skillfully manipulates light and the tone of the leaves to achieve that real heavy contrast in the trunks.  I can really appreciate that, because I love walking in the woods and appreciating the scenery, but it's hard to find something specifically that's interesting enough to photograph, everything kind of runs together.  Here, he does a great job of showing the biodiversity of the forest.
