Matt Thyssen - Landscape & Portrait

Bryan Schutmaat

Portrait: In this photo Schumaat uses a very shallow depth of field to blur out the background, which really keeps the focus on the subject.  The background really plays well with the color, and the patterns of the shirt.  The horizontal lines on the wall almost become the lines in his shirt.  The way he places the light behind the subject's head really draws your attention to that specific point, further from how the depth of field does.  I feel like it's two-fold, it almost looks like a halo to me, I don't know if that's what the artist was going for, but it struck me that way at first.  The first thing I think anybody would notice about this, however, is the subject itself.  The expression, juxtaposed with the wrinkles, thinning hair, scruffy beard really tell a story.

Landscape: The first thing that sticks out to me in this one is how he places those branches in the corner, which points to the subject on the horizon line.  The artist doesn't need to place his subject in the dead center to draw the viewer's attention, but he places those branches there, which immediately draw your eye to the subject.  He plays with heavy depth in this one as well, the atmospheric perspective and diminishing scale of the telephone lines on the horizon work really well to portray that depth.  They almost lead your eye the other direction after looking at the structure. The use of texture, as well as color and light are very dominant in this one too.
