What are the artist's technical choices?
Baker chose to take the photos in black and white to leave more focus on the subjects instead of the colors in the photos. He also placed the people in their homes doing normal activities such as playing music, cooking, etc.
What are the artist's conceptual and/or thematic intents?
To me it seems like he left the photos black and white because he wanted to be ironic and show that society and the people within are not classified into black and white categories. There is a lot of gray within and those people seem to be shoved aside because it is shocking to our society. He wanted to show the differences and bring attention to the people who are on the outside and that we should accept them for who they are.
How do you respond to these choices and intents?
When I first saw his pictures I was taken back and a little shocked because seeing a man in a dress or with breasts is not something that we, as a society, display. However, that is why I chose him, because it is shocking to people his photos bring the viewer in and holds them there. I also chose the photos that are more shocking because in reality we do push these people aside. We try to hide them away and place everyone in these black and white categories which no one fits in even though we are expected to, that is why I am glad he left them without color. He composed these photos well to display this.
