Kellen Clarke- Weekly Artist Post (Portrait/Landscape)

Paul D'Amato

On one side of the landscape picture above is a city that is thriving and working, but on the left side the place is rustic and falling apart. If Paul D'Amato had not chosen to include the top of the building crumbling and falling apart, the image would have been on the 2x5 building in the middle. The left and right sides to give that sense of struggle v. thriving. But the bright blue hues in the sky rushing towards that middle building shows the right side dark and useless, and the left side bright and potential. That leads me to think Paul realized his location and used the dark and light contrast and architecture to map out the real problems in that area.

Light. That one beautiful blast on light on her face provides so many questions. But one specific question is what is blocking the light from shining all the way down her face to her shoulder. That dark line pulls me back to her face. Giving the attention to her face, Paul used the space around her to make it dark and almost angry. Her body faces the corner but her head is looking in a different direction. Right behind the back of her head I see a ban aster and what I predict are stairs. Now changing my thoughts to she was placed in a chair right by the stairs in the dark. Opening that window just a bit to show her expression of I "can" leave but i "can't" really leave.
