Gregory Halpern's portrait of the main in the first picture catches the viewers eye. When i first saw this picture I focused on the dark side. The light & dark over the man's face and body makes me believe there is more to the story. The man looks beaten but not because of the blood on his nose, but by the look in his eye. Gregory made the picture with a blurry or unclear background. By looking at his face I think he is standing outside the boxing or fighting ring. The lightness on his face with the blood running onto his dark side brings one's eye to down and over to the arm grasping the dark object. The direction Gregory places him allows for the conclusion.
The landscape picture to me is about lines & time. The plane lines become parallel to each diagonal roof in the foreground. If Gregory had been standing at a different angle or position, the lines would not match up in the same way. There is also an immediate feeling of sadness or darkness but the bright light in the center behind the car showers the picture with hope. This could be from the location choice by having an older house with old cars, giving the viewer a moment to hope.
