Landscape and Portrait- 2

Susan Worsham

Worsham captured this photograph as soon as the sun was rising or setting. She was able to compose this composition at exactly the right moment. Otherwise, it very easily could have been mundane. There is a little bit of yellow in the grass that mirrors the yellows from the sun. The lights from the car also mirrors the brightness from the sun. The sky and time of day allows the trees to be almost completely silhouetted. The direction of the roads, fence, and houses creates a nice angled frame  There is also some shadowing in the grass that helps frame this composition a bit more.

Sunlight plays a major role in the success of this photograph. Worsham's decision to capture and outside subject from inside a window allows the viewer to see the effects of the sunlight from inside the room she is in as well as outside of it. The way the sun hits the side of the subject's face and also bounces off of the door and left side of the window almost matches up. The oranges you get from the sunlight hitting that left side of the frame unifies with the orange in her shirt, as well as the oranges in the sheet. The green of the grass and the green of the leaves work nicely together, contrasting with the oranges. Without the sheet framing the subject the way it does and creating some of those color contrasts, I don't believe this photo would be nearly as successful.
