Chevon McClenney-Weekly Artist Post

Caroline Jensen is an American photographer who resides on 200 acres of Minnesota prairie. Collaborating with her daughter since the age of 4, she documents her childhood in a variation of posed portraits and stolen moments of everyday life. Because the photographer did not have many photos of her own childhood, her aim is to make sure that her daughter has images to look back on with her children.

Jensen prefers to use natural and available light only and this really lends to her style of photography. Because she is a fan of the Dutch Master Painters, her images have a dramatic balance of contrasting values, with dark, sometimes black edges with highlights separating her subject from the background which give her photos a painterly quality.

Because we are working on portraits in class, I was drawn to her images. The motion that she captures in some of her photos is great and really lets the viewer feel the energy given off by her daughter at that moment. I would love to be able to produce at least one portrait this good by the end of the semester.
