Kat Hennessy- Weekly Post [Week 3]

Erin Hernsberger

Erin Hernsberger photographs her subjects on a solid background or with some kind of backdrop that falls to the background without detracting from the content itself. The object is represented in the foreground with clarity and emphasis. Her focus is on the body itself and the objectification of it within society. She also wants to bring to light the body not just on the outside, but also on the inside. She stages organ-like objects on a solid background as a still life image. There is not a lot of content or information outside of the main subject itself, which causes the object to be the very and only thing seen and drives home the point trying to be made by these materials.

Hernsberger's subjects and choices on content speak loudly towards her ideas on the human body. In her series "Unlivable Body," she highlights the subjects imperfections, and by using the highly contrasted black and white gives the feeling that it is not about the color of the skin, but rather the physical being itself. The subject is shown grasping the extra weight on her stomach and breasts, and the stretchmarks are shown openly. It causes the viewer to face the very idea of the bodily "imperfections" and the fear of how society responds to it.
