Mary Jane Morris: Weekly Post

Sid Avery was a famous American photographer best known for capturing intimate moment of Hollywood's most legendary celebrities during his time. These photographs were showcased in Avery's book "Hollywood at Home." Avery's photographs consist of a casual setting with a full range of gray, black, and white. He typically didn't have his subjects looking at the camera.
Since most celebrities are told to look at the camera for their "glamour" shots, I think it is interesting that Avery often had them not looking into the camera. This creates a feeling of intimacy with the celebrity he is photographing. It also makes it feel casual  and like you would be hanging out with a friend. Sid Avery was also not afraid of distracting elements in his compositions. Most of the time we get rid of anything that might take away from the subject; however, I believe Avery did this to show how celebrities are people just like us. Avery was able to have us look at celebrities and not have to feel intimidated by their social status.
