Breotnie Nichols - Weekly Artist Post

Sally Mann

1) Sally Mann shows a masterful control of exposure. While the images consist of mostly dark values, there is a small presence of light. This beautiful mixture of light and dark values adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to her photos.

2) In Sally Mann's series, Proud Flesh, she captures images of naked people, specifically of those whose bodies are more aged. This series challenges the idea that older people cannot be viewed as sensual. Sally Mann was able to create intimate photos which portray her subjects in such a graceful manner. It makes me forget about the age of the subjects, which is what I believe was Sally Mann's goal.

3) I appreciate that Sally Mann goes against societal norms. Older individuals usually are not shown in such intimate scenes as the ones Sally Mann has managed to capture. The comfort that these individuals appear to have in their most vulnerable state speaks volumes. I find these images to be truly captivating. It makes me look forward to growing old.
